The airport is located approx. 25 miles west of downtown Washington, on a border of Fairfax and Loudoun Counties, in the state of Virginia.

The airport is named after the Secretary of State during the presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower, John Foster Dulles.

Dulles Toll Road connects to the airport via an un-tolled road, Dulles Access Road, which allows driving to the airport without toll charges.
