Warsaw-Modlin Airport - WMI is a new airport in Warsaw. In Poland, Modlin Airport is known as Mazowiecki Port Lotniczy Warszawa-Modlin. Initially, this former military aerodrome was meant to be an auxiliary airport to the overloaded country´s main Warsaw Chopin International Airport, especially during the UEFA EURO 2012 Championship, held in Poland and Ukraine in summer 2012.
However, later it was decided that Warsaw-Modlin Airport was to be a crucial part of development plans for Poland and the Warsaw region, standing a chance to become a key Central European airline hub for low-cost companies.
The regular airlines will continue to use Warsaw-Chopin International Airport close to the city centre.
Modlin Airport - get to Warsaw in a rental car
Modlin Aiport is situated 25 miles north from Warsaw in the district of Modlin, next to already existing road infrastructure: road 62 linking to important road 61 Warsaw-Augustow and the express road E77 Warsaw-Gdansk.
A new railway line with an underground station will connect Modlin to Warsaw and, in particular, to Warsaw´s main International Chopin Airport.
Driving from Modlin to Gdansk in a hire car will take approximtately 4,5 hours in daytime traffic, a bit less if driving the 310 km distance to Gdansk in the evening.
