History of Billund Airport in Jutland
The small town of Billund is mostly known as being the home of LEGO toys, founded here by Ole Kirk Christiansen in 1934. LEGO’s head office and original theme park are still located there and Billund Airport also has LEGO to thank for its existence.
In the late 1950’s after the “LEGO-brick” (as we know it today) was invented, LEGO’s popularity was expanding rapidly beyond Danish borders. As a result, the 2nd generation owner of LEGO, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, established an 800 metre landing strip and a hangar in close proximity to the factory in 1961.
However, the LEGO family had bigger ambitions for Billund’s future in aviation. By 1964 the entrepreneurial Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, had convinced local politicians and investors from several other municipals around Billund, that a commercial airport would benefit the area and by 1st of November 1964 Billund’s new commercial airport opened its doors to the public.

Legoland in Billund, Legoland California Carlsbad, Legoland Windsor UK, Legoland Germany Günzburg and Legoland Florida (largest in the world) were all sold as part of a major company restructuring in 2004.
The new and current owner of Legoland Parks is the UK Leisure Group ‘Merlin Entertainment’ who also own popular UK attractions such as Alton Towers, Thorpe Park and London Eye. Merlin has turned Legoland’s misfortune around and is not only running the Legoland parks successfully, but also just opened an all new park in Malaysia and planning to open 2 new LEGO theme parks in Japan and Dubai.
