Santorini Port (Athinios) is sometimes referred to as Fira, or Thira port, since it is located in only about 5 km distance from the main Santorini town, Fira (Thira).

The old port of Santorini - Skala Port
Another port serving the island of Santorini, the Skala Port is used mostly by large cruise ships, which due to their considerable size find it more convenient to anchor in the center of the extinct volcano.

Skala Port,  the older of two Santorini ports is located beneath Fira (Thira), the largest town of Santorini, at the bottom of a steep 260 meters tall slope. The challenging 580 steps path up to Fira/Thira town is only for able bodied tourists. Donkey ride destined for light-weighted tourists only costs €5. Skala Pier - Fira Town cable car is €5 per trip and departs every 20 minutes.

Santorini car hire can be surprisingly cheap, although an increase of prices is expected during the busiest months of the tourist season.
