Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania. The old city from the middle ages has been well restored. The old part of Vilnius with over 1500 buildings and covering 3.6 km2 is one of the oldest quarters is Europe and has been granted World Heritage status.
The river Vilnia meets the larger river Neris in Vilnius. Vilnius is also known as the Paris of eastern Europe due to it’s many open squares, impressive buildings and wide waterways running through the city. The capital of Lithuania, along with Latvia’s capital Riga and the city of Krakow in Poland, is ranked as one of the most beautiful cities in eastern Europe.
Vilnius is also by far one of the least expensive capitals in Europe.
The distance to the Russian border is merely 18 miles. The distance between Vilnius and Riga is only 186 miles.
Car hire in Vilnius Airport
The airport in Vilnius is about 4 miles south of Vilnius and is the largest airport in Lithuania.
Vilnius International Airport – VNO is also known as Tarptautinis Vilniaus Oro Uostas in Lithuanian. The originally russian built airport from the 1950’s was extended in 2007 and a new modern terminal added to it.

The price for the cheapest hire vehicle (Ford fiesta or similar) at Vilnius Airport during the summer months is usually around £180-£200 for a weeks car hire.
When hiring a vehicle outside of the tourist season it is often possible to find a hire car for £150 for a weeks car hire from Vilnius Airport.
It can be a little bit less expensive to hire a car from Vilnius airport than from Vilnius city centre, but the difference is not as great as in many other cities.

Every now and again you may be lucky enough to find a good car hire offer in Vilnius when looking to hire a 4x4.

Driving a hire vehicle in the Baltic countries
You can usually drive your hire car from Vilnius in Lithuania to the other Baltic countries Latvia and Estonia without any problems arising. The car hire companies often operate in all three countries from the same head office.
It is often allowed to drive in neighbouring Poland as well. It is on the other hand often not possible to visit Russia or Belarus (where you would also need a visa) in a Lithuanian hire car. Driving and car hire conditions in Lithuania
The road network in Lithuania has improved greatly and there are usually no issues when travelling between the larger cities. Roads less travelled are however often below the normal European standard. Driving on these rough roads can be hard on the hire cars.
Remember to inspect your hire car for any damages when collecting in Vilnius. Although the excess is usually low on hire cars in Vilnius, you may find yourself in trouble due to a chipped windscreen, scratches, missing hub caps, damaged tyres etc.
