Polish cultural life is thriving and a number of festival and cultural events of international recognition are regularly held across the country.

The cities of Krakow and Warsaw continue to be the main centres of culture in Poland, as well as the most interesting destinations from the tourist point of view. Find below a few suggestions of interest-worthy events to take place in Poland in 2014.

Open’er Festival

The Heineken Open’er Festival is the most recognizable rock and pop music event in Poland and a two time winner of the European Festival Award in the category of Best Major Festival. Amongst the artists performing in previous editions of Open’er were: Franz Ferdinand, Bjork, Coldplay, Pearl Jam, Massive Attack, Skunk Anansie, the Prodigy, Erykah Badu Sonic Youth, Rihanna and Kings of Leon.

The festival takes place every year in July on the grounds of an old military airport in Gdynia, in northern Poland. If you are travelling to Poland for the Open’er, find time to visit the beautiful Tri-City - Gdynia, Sopot and Gdansk - on the Baltic Sea coast.

Orange Warsaw Festival 2014

Orange Warsaw Festival is one of the most important summer festivals in Poland. The 2013 edition, held in the National Stadium, registered a record-breaking number of nearly 100.000 spectators. The list of musicians performing at the Orange Warsaw Festival since its origins in 2008, includes: Mika, Nelly Furtado, Skunk Anansie, Moby, My Chemical Romance, Jamiroquai, Linking Park, The Prodigy, Offspring, Fatboy Slim and Beyonce.

Woodstock Festival Poland 2014

No, it’s not a mistake: the Woodstock legacy is still very much alive in Poland. The iconic and unprecedented event held in Bethel, New York in 1969 was a great inspiration for the organizers of one of the most important rock music festivals, known in Poland as Przystanek Woodstock (Woodstock Station). The ticket-free event mottoed ‘Love, Friendship & Music’ was first held in 1995, having been hosted by Kostrzyn town, near the border with Germany, since 2004.

The festival is organized by most popular and respected Polish NGO’s, the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity known for having raised significant funds for child health care in Poland.

Audioriver Festival 2014

Audioriver festival has been drawing attention of electronic and alternative music fans since its first edition in 2006. Concerts and the related events take place on the beach on the Vistula River, in Plock, 110 km north-west of Warsaw.

Krakow Summer Jazz Festival 2014

One of the most important events in jazz-loving Poland is held in the iconic Piwnica pod Baranami club, in Krakow. Additional events take place in several other venues across the city - in the Krakow's Philharmonics, on the Main Market and on the grounds of the Archaeological Museum - providing an excellent occasion to get to know better the historic city of Krakow. Since the first edition in 1996, world-class musicians have performed at Summer Jazz Festival in Krakow, amongst them: Jean-Luc Ponty, Bobby McFerrin, Stanley Clark, Chick Corea, Lee Konitz, Branford Marsalis, Nigel Kennedy and Michal Urbaniak.

Warsaw Summer Jazz Days 2014

Held since 1992, this annual festival of jazz music consists of several events, including a free open-air concert at the Royal Palace Square in Warsaw’s Old Town and a final gala in a prestige Warsaw venue, the Congress Hall. On a long list of famous participant are: Bradford Marsalis, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Bela Fleck, Al di Meola, Michael Brecker, Pat Matheney, Joshua Redman and Bobby McFerrin.

World Music Days Wroclaw 2014

The event under the patronage of ISCM (International Society for Contemporary Music) is a celebration of contemporary music in its different forms. The programme of the festival 2014 edition includes traditional concerts, music installations, sound sculptures and other innovative types of music performances.

Jewish culture festivals Poland 2014

Jewish Culture Festival Krakow 2014

With over 15 editions so far, the Jewish Culture Festival held annually in Krakow, has grown into one of the most important events of that type worldwide. The history of the Jewish community in Poland and the Jewish culture is celebrated in Krakow through an amazingly diverse array of activities, ranging from theatre and performing arts spectacles, concerts, installations, to crafts shows and culinary events.
